Web Developer Resume: Examples, Skills, and Writing Guide

Build a web developer resume for front-end, back-end, or full-stack roles: a full sample, bullets by level, performance metrics, projects, and BLS pay data.

Key takeaways

  • Decide whether you are pitching front-end, back-end, or full-stack work, and lead with the stack and metrics that specialty is judged on.
  • Write bullets that pair what you built and the stack you used with a measurable result such as load time, conversion, uptime, or hours saved.
  • Report performance gains with real metrics like Core Web Vitals, and say how you measured them.
  • Link live projects and a tidy GitHub profile, because reviewers often check code before they call.
  • Web developers earned a median $92,650 in May 2025, with the highest pay in the information industry.

A web developer resume gets read by two very different audiences. A recruiter scans it for job titles, stack keywords, and years of experience. Then an engineer reads it looking for evidence that you can ship working, fast, maintainable software. Most resumes satisfy the first reader and lose the second.

This guide helps you write for both. You'll learn how to position yourself as front-end, back-end, or full-stack, how to turn tasks into results with performance and business metrics, and how to present projects when your job history is thin. You'll also get skills and metrics tables, bullets for every seniority level, a complete sample resume, and BLS pay data.

The short version: name your specialty and stack up front, quantify what your code changed, and link work a reviewer can open.

What hiring teams look for in a web developer resume#

"Web developer" covers a lot of ground. The same title can mean a WordPress specialist at an agency, a React engineer on a product team, or a full-stack developer who also runs deployments. Your first job is to make clear which kind you are.

Hiring managers usually look for four things in the first pass:

  • A clear specialty: front-end, back-end, full-stack, or a platform such as Shopify or WordPress.
  • A stack that matches the posting: the languages, frameworks, and databases the team actually uses.
  • Evidence of shipped work: production features, live sites, or projects with real users.
  • Results: faster pages, more conversions, fewer bugs, less manual work, or lower costs.

Front-end, back-end, and full-stack resumes differ#

Each specialty is judged on different evidence. Use this table to decide what to lead with.

How a developer application is usually screened#

Knowing the path your resume travels helps you write for each stop. At most companies, a web developer application passes through three readers in sequence.

  • The ATS and recruiter screen: a keyword and title check, plus a quick look at years of experience and location. Clear headings and the posting's exact stack terms matter most here.
  • The hiring manager or engineer review: a closer read of bullets, projects, and links. Specific results, credible metrics, and readable code matter most here.
  • The technical interview: every claim on the page becomes a possible question. Anything you can't explain in depth is a liability.

Write the top third of the page for the first reader and every bullet for the third. A resume that survives a skeptical engineer's questions will also pass the recruiter.

If the role leans heavily toward application architecture and algorithms, our software engineer resume guide covers what larger engineering teams expect. If you work closely with designers, the UX designer resume guide shows how they describe the same projects from the user's side.

Web developer salary and job outlook#

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook reports that web developers earned a median annual wage of $92,650 in May 2025. The lowest-paid 10% earned less than $48,100, and the highest-paid 10% earned more than $162,290.

Pay varies sharply by industry. Developers in the information sector, which includes software publishers and media companies, earned the most.

Job outlook for web developers#

BLS projects employment of web developers to grow 4% from 2025 to 2035, about 3,300 new jobs, slightly faster than the 3% average for all occupations. There were 87,400 web developer jobs in 2025. Across web developers and digital designers combined, BLS expects about 13,600 openings a year, mostly from people changing occupations or leaving the workforce.

Depending on the employer, a developer building web applications may be classified as a software developer rather than a web developer, so the BLS numbers above don't capture every web-focused role. Either way, modest growth means competition for good roles stays real.

Which pay band your resume targets#

Use the BLS figures to calibrate what your resume needs to prove. The table below is a practical guide to the evidence that usually separates each band.

Pay band (May 2025)Typical profileEvidence your resume needs
Under $48,100 (lowest 10%)Entry-level, small agencies, part-timeProjects, clean code, one solid stack
Around $92,650 (median)Mid-level product or agency developerShipped features with measurable results
$119,940 (information median)Developer at a software or media companyScale, performance, testing, collaboration
Over $162,290 (highest 10%)Senior or lead developer, architectArchitecture decisions, leadership, business impact

The best format for a web developer resume#

Use a reverse-chronological format with your most recent role first. It's what recruiters expect, and it parses cleanly in applicant tracking systems. Skip functional formats that hide dates; technical reviewers tend to distrust them.

Section order depends on where your strongest evidence lives:

Career stageSection orderLength
Student or bootcamp graduateSummary, Projects, Skills, Education, Experience1 page
Career changerSummary, Projects, Skills, Relevant experience, Training1 page
FreelancerSummary, Freelance experience, Selected projects, Skills1 page
Mid-level (2–7 years)Summary, Experience, Skills, Projects, Education1 page
Senior or leadSummary, Experience, Skills, Education1–2 pages

Layout rules that help both readers#

Keep the design plain and scannable. Use one column, standard section headings ("Experience," "Projects," "Skills"), and a readable font at 10–12 points. Avoid skill bars and charts that rate your JavaScript at "four out of five stars." They tell the reader nothing and can confuse ATS parsing.

Save as a text-based PDF unless the posting asks for Word, and name the file clearly, such as Firstname-Lastname-Web-Developer.pdf.

Your header is where technical reviewers decide whether to look at your code. Make that easy.

  • Name and target title ("Front-End Developer," "Full-Stack Web Developer")
  • City and state, or "Remote"
  • Email and phone number
  • GitHub profile URL
  • Portfolio or personal site URL
  • LinkedIn URL

Write each URL as readable text. Hyperlinks often disappear when a resume is parsed or printed, and a reviewer may need to type the address.

Tip

Before you link GitHub, pin your three best repositories and give each one a README with a description, the stack, setup steps, and a live demo link. A reviewer who lands on a clean, pinned profile in the first ten seconds is far more likely to keep reading.

The header link gets reviewers to your profile. Inline links get them to the right project. Add a short URL next to each featured project so a reviewer reading a bullet about a checkout rebuild can open that exact repository or demo.

What if your best work is private?#

Most professional code lives in private repositories. That's normal. Describe the work in detail on the resume, and use side projects or open-source contributions as your public samples. Never post employer code publicly to fill your portfolio.

How to write a web developer summary#

A summary should tell the reader your specialty, years of experience, core stack, and one result. Keep it to two or three lines. Our resume summary examples guide has more patterns if you're stuck.

Web developer summaries by specialty

Front-end:

Front-end developer with 4 years building accessible React and TypeScript interfaces for e-commerce. Cut mobile LCP from 4.1s to 2.2s on a 300-page storefront and lifted checkout conversion 11%. Comfortable owning features from design handoff to production.

Back-end:

Back-end web developer with 6 years in Node.js and PostgreSQL, focused on API performance and reliability. Rebuilt an order service that now handles 3x peak traffic at a p95 latency under 180 ms with 99.95% uptime.

Full-stack (career changer):

Full-stack developer and former operations analyst with a bootcamp certificate and 3 shipped projects in React, Express, and PostgreSQL. Built an inventory app now used daily by a 12-person nonprofit, replacing 6 hours a week of spreadsheet work.

Writing experience bullets that show impact#

The strongest web developer bullets connect four things: what you built, the stack you used, how you did it, and what changed. You won't fit all four every time, but aim for at least three.

A bullet formula for developers#

Use this pattern: action verb + what you built or changed + key technology + measurable result.

For example: "Rebuilt the product listing page in Next.js with server-side rendering and image optimization, cutting LCP from 3.8s to 1.9s and raising organic traffic 18%."

Starting with a precise verb matters. "Built," "migrated," "refactored," "optimized," "automated," and "instrumented" each describe a different kind of work. Our list of resume action verbs has more, grouped by what you actually did.

Before and after rewrites#

Here's how the formula turns duty-style bullets into evidence.

Before and after: web developer bullets

BeforeResponsible for front-end development using React.

AfterBuilt 14 React components for a self-serve billing portal, reducing billing support tickets by 31% in the first quarter after launch.

BeforeWorked on improving website performance.

AfterCut JavaScript bundle size 42% through code splitting and dependency cleanup, improving mobile INP from 340 ms to 160 ms.

BeforeMaintained backend APIs.

AfterAdded caching and query indexes to 6 high-traffic Node.js endpoints, lowering p95 latency from 620 ms to 190 ms and cutting database costs 24%.

If you have a stack of weak bullets to fix, the resume bullet point generator can give you a draft to work from. Replace anything it suggests with your real numbers.

What to quantify on a web developer resume#

Web development is full of measurable outcomes. This table lists the metrics reviewers trust most and where to find them.

What to quantifyExample metricsWhere to find the number
Page performanceLCP, INP, CLS, Lighthouse score, page weightPageSpeed Insights, Search Console, RUM tools
Business resultsConversion rate, revenue, signups, bounce rateAnalytics, A/B test reports

CostHosting or database spend reducedCloud billing reports
AccessibilityWCAG issues fixed, audit score changeAccessibility audits and scanners
ScaleUsers, page views, requests per day, pagesAnalytics, infrastructure dashboards

For a deeper method on finding and estimating numbers honestly, see how to quantify achievements on a resume.

Report performance metrics correctly#

Performance claims are where web developers most often lose credibility. "Made the site 50% faster" invites the question: faster at what, measured how? Use named metrics instead.

Google's Web Vitals guidance sets these "good" thresholds: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) of 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads. INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in 2024, so use INP on a current resume.

Warning

Don't quote a lab Lighthouse score as if it were real-user performance. If your number came from a single Lighthouse run, say so, or use field data such as Chrome UX Report or your own real-user monitoring. Interviewers who know performance will ask.

How to present web development projects#

Projects matter more in web development than in almost any other field, because a reviewer can open them. For juniors and career changers, projects often carry the whole resume. For experienced developers, one or two strong side projects can show skills a day job doesn't.

What a strong project entry includes#

Give each project the same structure as a job:

  • A name and a one-line description of what it does and for whom
  • The stack, listed in the same terms as the posting
  • Your role, especially on team projects
  • Two or three bullets with results: users, performance, test coverage, or problems solved
  • A live demo link and a repository link

TrailLog | Hiking trip planner | trail-log.example.com | github.com/example/trail-log

Next.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Prisma, Vercel

- Built a trip planner with offline map caching used by 240 monthly active users from a local hiking club.

- Reached LCP of 1.8s and CLS of 0.02 on mobile (field data, 75th percentile).

- Wrote 85 unit and integration tests with Vitest and Playwright; CI blocks merges below 80% coverage.

Our guide to listing projects on a resume covers when to use a separate section and how many projects to include.

Projects that impress, and ones that don't#

Reviewers have seen thousands of tutorial clones. A to-do app or weather widget built from a course won't separate you. Projects that do stand out usually have at least one of these qualities:

  • Real users, even a small group such as a club, a family business, or a nonprofit
  • A real constraint, such as offline support, accessibility, payments, or a third-party API
  • Engineering hygiene: tests, CI, typed code, clear commits, and documentation
  • A measurable result, like performance scores, load handled, or time saved for users

Web developer skills: languages, frameworks, and tools#

Your skills section should confirm what your bullets already prove. Group skills by category so a reviewer can find the stack in seconds, and list only what you could use on the job next week.

The Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey shows which languages developers actually use. JavaScript and HTML/CSS still lead, but TypeScript is now used by more than four in ten respondents.

The same survey's web framework results put Node.js (48.7%) and React (44.7%) far ahead, followed by jQuery, Next.js, Express, ASP.NET Core, Angular, and Vue.js. O*NET's profile of web developers also flags React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Git, and Kubernetes as in-demand technologies in job postings.

Skills table for web developers#

Use this table to build a grouped skills section. Pick from each row only what matches your experience and the posting.

For accessibility, cite the standard directly. The W3C's WCAG 2.2 is the current version and defines conformance levels A, AA, and AAA, so "built to WCAG 2.2 AA" is a precise, checkable claim.

You can draft a grouped list with the technical skills generator, then trim it to what you can defend in an interview. Our guide to technical skills on a resume covers how to group and order them.

Show depth, not just a list#

A flat list of 20 technologies tells the reader nothing about which ones you could use tomorrow. Two simple fixes help. First, order each group by strength, so your best language or framework comes first. Second, if you need to include tools you've only touched, split them onto a separate line labeled "Familiar with."

Skip self-ratings such as "Expert" or percentages. They can't be checked and often backfire in interviews. The better signal is context: a technology that appears in three bullets with results is clearly a strength, and one that appears only in the skills list is clearly secondary.

Soft skills web developers should prove#

Teams care about how you work as much as what you know. Instead of listing "communication" or "teamwork," show them inside bullets: code reviews you led, documentation you wrote, client requirements you clarified, or a junior developer you mentored.

Web developer resume bullets by seniority level#

Expectations change as you grow. Juniors prove they can ship clean code. Mid-level developers prove ownership. Seniors prove judgment, scale, and influence. Use these examples as models and replace every detail with your own.

Junior web developer bullets#

At this level, reviewers want proof you can take a ticket to production with guidance, write tests, and learn quickly.

Junior web developer bullets

- Built 9 responsive landing pages in React and Tailwind CSS for marketing campaigns, each passing WCAG 2.2 AA checks before launch.

- Fixed 40+ front-end bugs in the first 6 months, including a form validation issue that had blocked 3% of signups.

- Wrote Playwright tests for the checkout flow, raising end-to-end coverage of critical paths from 20% to 65%.

- Paired with a senior developer to migrate 12 pages from jQuery to React with no regressions reported.

Mid-level web developer bullets#

Mid-level developers own features end to end. Show decisions, collaboration with design and product, and measurable outcomes.

Mid-level web developer bullets

- Owned the redesign of a subscription checkout in Next.js and Stripe, lifting conversion from 3.1% to 3.6% across 80,000 monthly visitors.

- Cut mobile LCP from 4.1s to 2.2s (field data) by moving to server rendering, responsive images, and font subsetting.

- Designed a REST API for a partner integration used by 25 retailers, with 99.9% uptime over 12 months.

- Introduced a shared component library adopted by 3 teams, cutting UI build time for new pages by about a third.

Senior web developer bullets#

Senior developers shape architecture and raise team quality. Bullets should show scope across systems and the business result.

Senior web developer bullets

- Led migration of a 400-page content site from a legacy PHP monolith to a headless CMS and Next.js, cutting hosting costs 38% and publishing time from 2 days to 2 hours.

- Set performance budgets enforced in CI; share of URLs passing Core Web Vitals rose from 41% to 88% in 2 quarters.

- Mentored 5 developers through code review and pairing; 2 were promoted to mid-level within a year.

- Partnered with security to remediate 30 OWASP-category findings ahead of a SOC 2 audit.

Lead and staff-level bullets#

At the lead level, your impact is the team's output and the technical direction. Connect engineering decisions to delivery speed, reliability, and revenue.

Lead web developer bullets

- Led a team of 7 developers delivering the company's customer portal, shipping weekly instead of monthly after moving to trunk-based development.

- Defined the front-end architecture roadmap adopted across 4 product teams, reducing duplicated components by 60%.

- Cut production incidents by half over a year by adding error budgets, alerting, and blameless postmortems.

Why this sample works#

  • The specialty is obvious from the title and the first line of the summary.
  • Every role has numbers, including performance metrics with clear definitions.
  • The stack appears in context, inside bullets, before it's repeated in the skills list.
  • A public project gives reviewers something to open even though the day-job code is private.
  • The skills section is grouped and short enough to read in five seconds.

Freelance and self-taught web developer resumes#

Plenty of web developers learn on their own, through bootcamps, or by building client sites. Your resume can compete with degree holders if it shows real work clearly.

How to list freelance web development#

List freelance work as a job with a business name or "Freelance Web Developer," a date range, and bullets that summarize the scale of your client work. Then name two or three representative clients or projects with results. Our guide to freelance work on a resume covers how to handle gaps and overlapping contracts.

Freelance web developer entry

Freelance Web Developer | Self-employed | 2021–Present

- Built and maintained 22 websites for small businesses in WordPress, Shopify, and Next.js.

- Redesigned a bakery's online ordering site; online orders rose from 40 to 95 a week within 3 months.

- Cut average client page load time from 5.2s to 2.0s through image, caching, and hosting changes.

- Manage hosting, backups, and security updates for 14 retainer clients with zero data-loss incidents.

Self-taught and bootcamp developers#

If you don't have a degree, lead with projects and put training below them. BLS notes that education requirements for web developers range from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree, and some employers accept experience or projects instead. O*NET's survey of the occupation found that 46% of respondents said new hires need a bachelor's degree, which means many roles don't require one.

Translate past jobs into relevant evidence where you can:

  • Retail or hospitality: troubleshooting under pressure, handling customer requirements
  • Operations or admin: automating spreadsheets, building internal tools, documenting processes
  • Marketing: landing pages, analytics, SEO, and A/B tests
  • Design: interface work, responsive layouts, collaboration with developers

Our entry-level resume guide covers how to place education, coursework, and training when experience is light.

Tailoring your web developer resume for each posting#

Two postings with the same title can want completely different stacks. Tailoring is how you make sure the reviewer sees the overlap without hunting for it.

A six-step tailoring routine#

  1. Copy the posting and highlight every language, framework, tool, and practice it names.
  2. Mark which ones are requirements and which are nice-to-haves.
  3. Check your resume against the posting with a resume keyword scanner and note honest gaps.
  4. Reorder your skills groups so the posting's stack appears first.
  5. Move the most relevant bullet to the top of each role, and swap in projects that use the team's stack.
  6. Rewrite the summary's stack and proof point to match, then export a fresh PDF.

To see how closely your resume matches overall, the resume to job description match tool gives a score and prioritized edits. For a fuller method, read how to tailor your resume.

Note

Match the posting's exact spelling. If it says "Node.js," "PostgreSQL," and "TypeScript," don't write "Node," "Postgres," and "TS." Recruiters often search for the literal strings, and some ATS keyword matches are just as literal.

Agency, product company, or in-house team#

The type of employer changes what the same skills should look like on the page. Agencies and consultancies hire for range and speed: show the number of client sites, the variety of platforms, and on-time delivery. Product companies hire for depth and ownership: show a feature or system you improved over months, with metrics. In-house teams at non-tech companies, such as a university or a retailer, often value reliability and maintenance: show uptime, security updates, and the internal users you supported.

You don't need to rewrite your history for each type. Reorder bullets so the right kind of evidence comes first in each role.

Prepare for the technical screen at the same time#

Every technology on your resume is fair game in an interview. As you tailor, note which bullets you'd expand on in a technical conversation and practice explaining the trade-offs. Our technical interview prep guide covers how to prepare.

Common web developer resume mistakes#

These problems show up constantly in developer applications. Each is easy to fix.

  • Listing tasks, not results. "Developed web pages" could describe anyone. Say what the pages did and what changed.
  • Keyword dumps. A skills section with 40 technologies signals breadth without depth, and invites questions you can't answer.
  • Vague performance claims. "Improved speed" means nothing without a metric, a before-and-after, and a measurement method.
  • Broken or empty links. A dead demo or an empty GitHub undermines everything else on the page. Test every link before you send.
  • Tutorial projects as centerpieces. Course clones don't separate you. Feature projects with real users or real constraints.
  • Hiding your role on team work. "We built" leaves the reader guessing. Say what you built, owned, or decided.
  • Outdated stacks up front. If the posting is React and TypeScript, don't lead with a jQuery project from six years ago.
  • Ignoring accessibility and testing. Many teams treat both as baseline skills now. One bullet each shows you care about quality.

Next steps: finish and send your web developer resume#

Start with your most impressive piece of shipped work and write its bullet using the formula: what you built, with what, and what changed. Then work through each role and project, adding a metric or scope detail to every bullet you can. Write the summary last.

Before you send it, run through this checklist:

  • Title and summary name your specialty and core stack
  • GitHub, portfolio, and demo links work and are written as readable URLs
  • Pinned repositories have READMEs, setup steps, and live links
  • Most bullets include a metric, with performance claims named and measured
  • Skills are grouped and match the posting's spelling
  • Layout is one column with standard headings and no skill bars
  • File is a text-based PDF with a clear name

If you're starting from an old resume, Resume Maker can import a PDF or Word file and lets you keep separate versions for front-end, back-end, and full-stack roles, with an AI assistant that edits the resume directly. Whatever you use, keep each version focused on one specialty, and keep your best code one click away.

If your work leans toward pipelines, infrastructure, and deployments, compare your draft with our DevOps engineer resume guide. Those postings weigh reliability and automation evidence more heavily, and some of your bullets may belong in that version instead.

Frequently asked questions

One page for most web developers, including juniors, bootcamp graduates, freelancers, and mid-level engineers. Senior and lead developers with eight or more years of relevant experience can use two pages if the second page holds architecture, leadership, or major project work rather than old jobs and long tool lists. Reviewers skim quickly, so cut anything that doesn't support the role you want.

Yes, if it helps you. Link it in the header when it has pinned repositories with clear READMEs, working demos, and recent activity. If your GitHub is mostly empty forks or old tutorial code, link a portfolio site or specific project repositories instead. A reviewer who opens a messy profile may judge your code quality from it.

Group them into languages, frameworks and libraries, back-end and databases, tools and DevOps, and testing. Common entries include JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, React, Node.js, SQL, Git, and a testing framework, but the right list depends on the posting. List only what you can discuss in a technical interview, and mirror the exact names the job description uses.

Put a Projects section above experience and treat two or three substantial projects like jobs, with the stack, your role, a live link, and a measurable detail such as users, performance scores, or test coverage. Add relevant coursework, bootcamp training, freelance or volunteer sites, and open-source contributions. Keep unrelated past jobs short and emphasize transferable skills like troubleshooting and client communication.

No. A long list of languages you used once makes you look unfocused and invites interview questions you can't answer. List the languages and frameworks you could use on the job next week, plus any the posting requires that you have real experience with. Move older or weaker skills to a short Familiar with line, or leave them off.

Not always. BLS says education requirements for web developers range from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree, and some employers accept experience or projects instead. A degree in computer science helps for some roles. Certifications are optional and matter most for cloud or platform-specific roles, while a strong project portfolio matters for almost every role.

A short summary helps when it tells the reader your specialty, years of experience, core stack, and one strong result in two or three lines. It is most useful for career changers, freelancers, and senior developers whose scope is hard to see from titles. Skip generic objective statements, and never repeat the skills list in sentence form.
