Sales Resume: Examples and Writing Guide From SDR to Manager

Write a sales resume that proves quota attainment: a full AE sample, pipeline metrics, bullets from SDR to manager, missed-quota advice, and BLS pay data.

Resume Maker Editorial TeamUpdated 19 min read

Key takeaways

  • Quota attainment is the first number sales leaders look for, so state it as a percentage with the quota size and time frame.
  • Give every result context: segment, deal size, sales cycle, and territory tell a reader how hard the number was to hit.
  • Rankings, promotions, and President's Club often say more than raw revenue, especially when your company's figures are confidential.
  • Match your bullets to your stage: activity and meetings for SDRs, closed revenue for AEs, team attainment and hiring for managers.
  • A missed-quota year is common; show what you controlled, such as ranking, pipeline built, or deal size, rather than hiding the year.

Sales might be the easiest job to write a resume for, because it comes with a scoreboard. It's also one of the easiest to get wrong. Many sales resumes list "prospected new clients" and "built strong relationships" while burying the one number every sales leader wants to see: how you performed against quota.

This guide shows you how to write a sales resume that leads with the scoreboard and gives it context. You'll get a full account executive sample resume, a table for stating quota attainment in every situation, including missed years, a bullet formula built for sales, metrics by role, and bullets for every stage from SDR to sales manager.

You'll also see pay and outlook data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and survey data on how common it is to miss quota, which matters more for your resume than you might think.

What sales leaders look for on a sales resume#

Sales managers and recruiters read sales resumes with a short checklist. If yours answers these questions near the top, you get a call.

Did you hit your number?#

Quota attainment is the first filter. A percentage against a stated quota, over a stated period, tells a reader more than any adjective. If you've exceeded quota several years running, say so plainly.

How hard was the number?#

A reader needs context to judge your results. Segment, deal size, sales cycle, and territory make the difference between "nice" and "impressive." Closing $1M in 30-day transactional deals is a different job from closing $1M in nine-month enterprise deals.

How do you sell?#

Leaders want to see your process: how you prospect, run discovery, build pipeline, and close. Methodologies and tools matter here, but only when they show up in results.

Are you on a growth path?#

Promotions from SDR to AE, from SMB to mid-market, or from rep to team lead show that other managers trusted you with more. Rankings and awards such as President's Club add proof from outside your own claims.

Sales salary and job outlook#

Sales pay varies widely by product type, and most of it comes from variable compensation. Here's what federal data shows.

According to the BLS, wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives earned a median of $76,460 in May 2025. Reps selling technical and scientific products earned a median of $104,920, while those selling other products earned $72,080. There were about 1,571,400 of these jobs in 2025, with about 123,400 openings projected each year from 2025 to 2035, mostly to replace workers who leave.

How sales pay is structured#

The BLS notes that most employers pay sales representatives a salary plus commission, a salary plus bonus, or both, with commissions usually a percentage of sales. That's why your resume should focus on attainment and revenue. Those numbers drive pay, and they're what hiring managers use to predict your performance.

The path to sales management#

Many reps aim for management. The BLS reports that sales managers earned a median of $148,270 in May 2025, with about 650,100 jobs and 4 percent projected growth from 2025 to 2035. Employers usually prefer several years of sales experience, which is why your rep-level resume should already show leadership signals like mentoring and team results.

What the data means for your resume#

The gap between technical and nontechnical sales pay is large. If you sell technical, scientific, or software products, make that clear in your headline and summary. If you're moving into technical sales, highlight any product knowledge, certifications, or technical background you already have.

A full sales resume example#

Here's a complete one-page sample for a mid-market account executive with about six years in sales. All names are generic. Use the structure, then replace every detail with your own.

Sample sales resume (mid-market account executive, 6 years)

JAMIE CARTER

Why this sample works#

  • The headline carries the scoreboard. Segment, industry, and consecutive years above quota appear before the reader gets to any bullet.
  • Every year has attainment and rank. Percentages, quota size, and team ranking let a reader compare years at a glance.
  • Context is clear. ACV and cycle length tell the reader what kind of selling this was.
  • Promotions tell a story. SDR to SMB AE to mid-market AE within one company shows trust and growth. Our guide to multiple positions at the same company shows other ways to format this.

How to show quota attainment on a sales resume#

Quota attainment is the most important number on your resume, so format it consistently. Use this table to handle the most common situations.

SituationHow to write itExample
Exceeded quotaRevenue, quota, percentage, period"Closed $1.32M against $1.1M quota in 2025 (120%)"
Consistent over-performanceCount of periods above quota"Exceeded quota 7 of 8 quarters"
Ranked on a teamRank, team size, measure"Ranked #2 of 14 AEs on new ARR"
Missed quota in a tough yearRank or controllable metrics"94% of quota; ranked #3 of 12 in a down year"
No quota (new or support role)Activity and outcome metrics"Booked 14 meetings a month vs. goal of 10"
Confidential revenuePercentages and rankings only"118% of annual quota; President's Club"

The quota line formula#

A strong quota bullet has four parts: the amount, the target, the percentage, and the period. Add a ranking when you can. "Closed $1.32M in new ARR against a $1.1M quota in 2025 (120%), ranking #2 of 14 AEs" leaves nothing for the reader to guess.

What to do about a missed year#

Missing quota is common, so don't panic about one bad year. In Salesforce's 2024 State of Sales survey of 5,500 sales professionals, 84 percent said they missed quota the previous year, and 67 percent didn't expect to hit it in the current year.

View data
LabelValue
Missed quota last year84%
Time spent on non-selling tasks70%
Don't expect to hit quota this year67%

Treat this as survey data from a sales software company, not a precise industry rate. Still, it shows that hiring managers have seen plenty of missed years. What they want to know is how you performed relative to your peers and what you controlled.

For a missed year, lead with rank, pipeline created, win rate, deal size, or new logos. If your whole team missed after a pricing change or territory cut, a top ranking tells the real story. Never round 94 percent up to 100.

Awards and recognition#

President's Club, top-rep awards, and "rookie of the year" recognitions are strong signals because someone else validated your results. List them in the relevant role or in a short "Awards" line. Our guide to awards on a resume covers formatting.

Important

Use numbers you can defend. Hiring managers often ask for proof of attainment, such as commission statements or stack-ranking reports, and some call references to confirm rankings.

Sales resume format and section order#

Most sales professionals should use a reverse-chronological format, because the hiring manager wants to see your recent results and your progression. The section order depends on your role.

Your situationFormatLengthSection order
SDR or BDRReverse-chronological1 pageSummary, experience, skills, education
Account executiveReverse-chronological1 pageSummary with attainment, experience, awards, skills, education

Sales manager or directorReverse-chronological1 to 2 pagesSummary, team results, experience, skills, education
Retail or service worker moving into B2BCombination1 pageSummary, sales highlights, experience, skills

Header and headline#

Include your name, city and state, phone, email, and LinkedIn URL. Under your name, write a headline with your role, segment, industry, and a performance hook, such as "Enterprise Account Executive | Cybersecurity | 3x President's Club."

Education, training, and certifications#

Education matters less in sales than results, so it usually goes at the bottom. The BLS notes that a high school diploma is often enough for nontechnical sales, while technical and scientific sales roles typically require a bachelor's degree. If you sell a technical product, list relevant degrees, product certifications, or technical training prominently.

Formal sales methodology training, such as a MEDDICC, Challenger, or Sandler course, belongs in a short "Training" line. It shows you know a shared language, but it only counts if your bullets show you used it.

Keep the format scannable#

Sales leaders skim. Use a single-column layout, bold nothing but section headings and a few key numbers, and keep bullets to one or two lines. An applicant tracking system will parse a clean layout more reliably than columns or graphics.

How to write sales resume bullets that close#

Sales bullets fail when they describe effort without results: "Made 80 calls a day" or "Managed a book of 50 accounts." Effort is good, but leaders hire for outcomes.

The number, context, method formula#

Build each bullet from three parts:

  • Number: the result, such as revenue, attainment, meetings, pipeline, or retention.
  • Context: segment, deal size, cycle length, territory, or team size.
  • Method: what you did to get there, such as a prospecting strategy, a qualification change, or a new play.

Lead with the number when it's strong. The context makes it believable, and the method makes it repeatable, which is what a hiring manager is really buying.

Before and after rewrites#

These examples show the formula in action. Replace the numbers with your own.

Before and after: sales resume bullets

BeforeResponsible for prospecting new clients.

AfterBuilt $2.4M in qualified pipeline in 2025 by running a 6-touch outbound sequence to 200 named accounts in healthcare.

BeforeManaged a book of business.

AfterManaged 55 mid-market accounts worth $3.8M ARR; grew net revenue retention to 112% through quarterly business reviews and 9 expansion deals.

BeforeExceeded sales goals.

AfterFinished 2025 at 126% of a $900K new-business quota, ranking #1 of 9 reps in the Central region.

BeforeMade cold calls and sent emails.

AfterBooked 16 qualified meetings a month against a goal of 10, the highest on a 12-person SDR team for 3 straight quarters.

The resume bullet point generator can help turn a duty into draft bullets, and the accomplishments generator is useful for awards and wins. Edit every draft so the numbers are yours.

Separate your results from the team's#

If you're on a pod or team-selling model, say what you owned. "Co-led a 3-person pursuit team that closed a $650K multi-year deal; owned discovery and the business case" is honest and still strong. Claiming the whole deal can unravel in a reference check.

What to quantify on a sales resume#

Sales generates more trackable numbers than almost any role. The trick is picking the ones that match your job and give a reader context.

Metric categoryWhat to measureExample phrasing
ActivityCalls, emails, meetings booked, demos run"Booked 16 meetings a month vs. goal of 10"
PipelinePipeline created, opportunities, coverage"Built $2.4M in qualified pipeline"
ConversionWin rate, stage conversion, cycle length"Raised win rate from 21% to 29%"
RevenueClosed revenue, ARR, attainment, deal size"118% of $1.0M quota"
Retention and growthRenewal rate, net revenue retention, upsells"Net revenue retention of 112%"
LeadershipTeam attainment, reps hired, ramp time"Team of 8 hit 104% of quota"

Context metrics belong on the page#

Some numbers aren't results but make your results meaningful. Average deal size, sales cycle length, segment, and territory tell a reader whether your role resembles theirs. A line in your summary such as "mid-market deals averaging $45K ACV with 60- to 90-day cycles" does that job efficiently.

Build your attainment history before you write#

Before you draft a single bullet, write down your attainment for every period you can document: quarter by quarter if you have it, year by year if not. Patterns jump out quickly. A steady record above 100 percent becomes a headline. A rising trend after a slow ramp becomes a growth story. A single dip with a strong rank becomes a footnote you can explain.

In this hypothetical, the rep would write "Exceeded quota 3 consecutive years, averaging 116%" in the summary and give the ramp year a single line about pipeline built. That framing is honest and puts the strongest pattern first.

When your company's numbers are confidential#

If you can't share revenue figures, use percentages, rankings, and ratios. "118% of annual quota, #2 of 14 reps" reveals nothing sensitive. Our guide to quantifying achievements on a resume has more techniques for estimating and rounding honestly.

Warning

Never inflate attainment or rankings. Sales is one of the few fields where employers can and do ask for documentation, and a mismatch can cost you an offer.

Sales resume bullets by career stage#

What impresses a sales leader changes as you move up. Use these samples as models, not copy.

Sales development representative (SDR or BDR)#

At this level, show activity, meetings, pipeline, and promotion readiness.

Sample bullets: SDR or BDR

- Booked an average of 14 qualified meetings a month against a goal of 10, ranking #2 of 12 SDRs over 4 quarters.

- Sourced 62 opportunities worth $1.9M in pipeline; 11 closed for about $480K in new ARR.

- Built a personalized outbound sequence for the healthcare segment that lifted reply rates from 3% to 7%.

- Promoted to account executive after 11 months, ahead of the typical 15-month path.

Account executive#

At this level, show closed revenue, attainment, deal context, and how you win.

Sample bullets: account executive

- Closed $1.18M in new ARR against a $1.0M quota (118%) in 2024 and earned President's Club.

- Averaged $45K ACV across 26 deals with 60- to 90-day sales cycles.

- Raised win rate from 21% to 29% by adding mutual action plans to every deal over $40K.

- Self-sourced 40% of pipeline through outbound to 150 named accounts.

Senior or enterprise account executive#

At this level, show large, complex deals, multi-threading, and strategic accounts.

Sample bullets: enterprise account executive

- Closed 3 seven-figure enterprise deals in 2025, including the company's largest new logo, a $1.6M three-year contract.

- Achieved 131% of a $2.2M annual quota with 6- to 9-month cycles and buying committees of 8 to 12 stakeholders.

- Coordinated solutions engineers, legal, and security teams through 14 procurement reviews.

- Built a partner co-selling motion with a systems integrator that sourced $3M in pipeline.

Account manager#

At this level, show retention, expansion, and customer health.

Sample bullets: account manager

- Managed 55 mid-market accounts worth $3.8M ARR, achieving 96% gross retention and 112% net revenue retention.

- Closed 9 expansion deals worth $410K by running quarterly business reviews tied to customer goals.

- Saved 4 at-risk accounts worth $290K by building recovery plans with product and support teams.

- Cut average renewal cycle from 45 to 30 days by starting renewal conversations 120 days out.

Sales manager#

At this level, show team attainment, hiring, coaching, and forecasting.

Sample bullets: sales manager

- Lead a team of 8 AEs that finished 2025 at 108% of a $9.2M team quota, up from 91% the year before.

- Hired 5 reps and cut average ramp time from 6 months to 4 with a structured onboarding plan.

- Raised forecast accuracy to within 5% of actuals by introducing weekly deal reviews.

- Promoted 3 reps to senior or enterprise roles in 2 years.

Skills for a sales resume#

A sales skills section should confirm your process and your tools in a few seconds. Group skills so a reader can scan them, and mirror the posting's terms where they fit.

Skill typeExamplesHow to prove it
Sales processProspecting, discovery, qualification, negotiation, closingShow a conversion or win-rate result
MethodologiesMEDDICC, Challenger, SPIN, Sandler, solution sellingName the method where it changed a result
Account growthAccount planning, QBRs, upselling, renewalsShow retention or expansion numbers
CRM and sales toolsSalesforce, HubSpot, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Outreach, GongMention tools inside results bullets
Analysis and forecastingPipeline management, forecasting, territory planningShow forecast accuracy or coverage

Tools that show up in postings#

O*NET's profile of wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives lists Salesforce, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel as in-demand technologies, with HubSpot, Marketo, Zoom, and Cisco Webex among the hot technologies. Salesforce in particular appears in many postings, so if you're fluent, make it visible.

Keywords by sales motion#

Mirror the language of the posting you're applying to:

  • Inside and SMB sales: high-velocity, inbound leads, demos, short sales cycle, activity metrics, transactional.
  • Mid-market and enterprise: multi-threading, buying committee, mutual action plan, business case, procurement, MEDDICC.
  • Field and territory sales: territory planning, route planning, distributor relationships, trade shows, in-person demos.
  • Account management: renewals, upsell, cross-sell, net revenue retention, QBRs, churn prevention.
  • Channel and partner sales: reseller enablement, co-selling, partner pipeline, joint business plans.

To find the terms a posting emphasizes, paste it into the resume keyword scanner. Our guide to resume keywords explains how to place them naturally.

Show soft skills through results#

Postings ask for resilience, communication, and relationship-building. Prove them with numbers instead of adjectives:

  • Resilience: "Rebuilt pipeline from $400K to $1.5M in two quarters after a territory change."
  • Communication: "Ran 30+ executive briefings a year with CFOs and CIOs."
  • Relationship-building: "Grew a 3-site customer to 11 sites over 2 years."
  • Coachability: "Raised discovery call scores from 62 to 85 on the team rubric after weekly coaching."

Sales resume summary examples#

Your summary should state your role, segment, attainment, and one differentiator. Keep it to two to four sentences.

Sales resume summary examples

SDR: Sales development representative with 18 months in B2B software, booking an average of 14 qualified meetings a month against a goal of 10. Ranked #2 of 12 SDRs over 4 quarters. Ready for a closing role in SMB or mid-market sales.

Account executive: Mid-market account executive with 6 years in B2B SaaS, closing deals averaging $45K ACV. Averaged 117% of quota over 3 years with President's Club in 2024. Strong outbound prospector who self-sources about 40% of pipeline.

Sales manager: Sales manager with 10 years in industrial equipment sales, leading a team of 8 reps across 5 states. Grew team attainment from 91% to 108% in one year and cut new-rep ramp time by a third.

The resume summary generator can produce a first draft from your title and results. For more patterns, see our resume summary examples.

Moving up from SDR to AE to sales manager#

Each step up the sales ladder is judged on different evidence. Your resume should show you're already doing parts of the next job.

From SDR to account executive#

Show that you can run conversations, not just book them. Highlight any deals you helped close, discovery calls you led, demos you ran, and opportunities that converted to revenue. A promotion within your company is strong proof, so list each title separately with dates.

From account executive to enterprise or strategic accounts#

Show complexity. Mention multi-stakeholder deals, longer cycles, procurement and security reviews, and larger contract values. If you closed even one larger deal than usual, give it its own bullet.

From rep to sales manager#

Show leadership before the title. Bullets about mentoring new reps, leading onboarding, running team trainings, or acting as interim team lead tell a hiring manager you're ready. Pair these with your own consistent attainment, because most managers are promoted from strong individual performers.

Sample bullets: showing manager readiness as a rep

- Led onboarding for 6 new AEs over 2 years, running weekly call reviews; 5 of 6 hit quota in their first full year.

- Served as interim team lead for 10 weeks during a manager vacancy, running pipeline reviews for 7 reps.

- Built the team's discovery call guide, now part of the standard onboarding curriculum.

- Maintained 112% personal attainment while carrying the extra mentoring work.

Tip

When you move into management, your resume's headline number changes from your attainment to your team's. Track team attainment, ramp time, and retention of your reps from your first month as a manager.

Entry-level and career-changer sales resumes#

Many strong salespeople start in retail, hospitality, customer service, recruiting, fundraising, or teaching. The skills transfer if you show them as results.

Find the sales results you already have#

Look for anything you persuaded people to do and anything you were measured on. Common examples:

  • Upsells, add-ons, or credit card sign-ups in retail.
  • Average check size or upsell rates in restaurants.
  • Customer satisfaction scores and save rates in customer service.
  • Dollars raised or donors recruited in fundraising.
  • Candidates placed or offers accepted in recruiting.

Write them like sales bullets#

Use the same number, context, method formula. Here's how a few non-sales roles translate:

Sample bullets: career changers moving into sales

Retail: Ranked #1 of 18 associates in add-on sales for 6 straight months, averaging 1.8 items per transaction against a store average of 1.3.

Restaurant: Raised average check size about 12% over a quarter by suggesting pairings, the top result among 22 servers.

Customer service: Saved 38% of cancellation calls with retention offers, versus a team average of 25%.

Fundraising: Raised $140K from 210 new donors in one year through phone and event outreach.

Each bullet shows a target, a result, and a comparison point, which is exactly how sales leaders think. Another example: "Ranked #1 of 18 associates in store credit card sign-ups for 6 straight months by opening each conversation around customer savings." Our guides to the retail sales associate resume and the customer service resume cover adjacent roles, and our list of transferable skills helps you name what carries over.

Sales versus marketing roles#

Some career changers apply to both sales and marketing. The resumes should differ: sales resumes lead with quota and revenue closed, while marketing resumes lead with pipeline generated and campaign results. See our marketing resume guide if you're weighing both.

Common sales resume mistakes#

These mistakes keep good sellers from getting interviews. Each one is quick to fix.

MistakeWhy it hurtsFix
No quota attainmentReader assumes you missedState percentage, quota, and period
Revenue with no contextCan't judge difficultyAdd segment, deal size, cycle, and rank
Activity-only bulletsEffort without outcomesPair activity with meetings, pipeline, or revenue
Claiming team deals as solo winsFails reference checksName your role in the deal
Listing compensation or OTEAnchors pay too earlySave pay for negotiation
Generic soft-skill claimsProves nothingShow resilience and relationships with numbers

Hiding promotions#

Some reps list only their latest title at a company, which hides the fastest proof of performance. List each role with its own dates and one or two bullets, even if they're short.

Writing for the wrong sales motion#

A transactional, high-volume resume and an enterprise resume look very different. If you're moving from SMB to enterprise, a list of 100 small deals can make you look like the wrong fit. Lead instead with your largest or most complex deals, the number of stakeholders you managed, and any long-cycle opportunities. Going the other way, from enterprise to high-velocity sales, emphasize speed, activity discipline, and how many deals you can run at once.

Burying the numbers in paragraphs#

Sales results should be the easiest thing on the page to find. If your attainment sits in the middle of a long paragraph, a skimming reader will miss it. Put percentages early in the bullet and keep each bullet to one or two lines.

Forgetting the interview follows the resume#

Every number on your resume will be tested. Prepare a short story behind each major result, including what you did, what went wrong, and what you learned. Our guide to behavioral interview questions can help you structure those stories.

Your sales resume checklist and next steps#

Before you apply, check your resume against this list:

  • Headline names your role, segment, industry, and a performance hook
  • Every closing role shows attainment as a percentage with quota and period
  • Rankings, awards, and President's Club appear where earned
  • Context metrics include deal size, cycle length, and segment
  • Bullets match your stage: meetings and pipeline for SDRs, revenue for AEs, team results for managers
  • Promotions are listed as separate roles with dates
  • Skills and tools match the posting
  • No compensation or OTE details

Then take these steps:

  1. Pull your attainment reports, stack rankings, and award emails for the last three years.
  2. Write a quota line for each year in each closing role.
  3. Rewrite your top bullets using the number, context, method formula.
  4. Tailor your headline and summary to the segment and industry in the posting.
  5. Prepare a one-minute story behind each major number.

When the offer comes, our guide on how to negotiate salary covers base, commission, and on-target earnings. If you want help drafting, Resume Maker can import your existing resume from PDF or Word so you can rework the bullets without retyping everything.

Frequently asked questions

Write the percentage, the quota amount or type, and the time period, for example: closed $1.3M against a $1.1M annual quota, 118% attainment. If you exceeded quota several years in a row, say so. Add your ranking on the team when you can, because it gives the number context. Keep the format consistent across every role so readers can compare years easily.

You don't need to list attainment for every year. Lead with what you controlled and what still compares well, such as ranking, pipeline created, win rate, deal size, or new logos. If the whole team missed because of a market shift, a ranking still tells the story. Be ready to explain the year honestly in interviews, along with what you changed afterward.

One page is right for most SDRs, account executives, and account managers with under about 10 years of experience. Sales managers and directors with several teams, large territories, or multiple companies can use two pages. Put attainment, rankings, and awards near the top of page one, because sales leaders often decide there whether to keep reading.

List your sales process skills, such as prospecting, discovery, negotiation, and closing; any methodologies you've used, such as MEDDICC, Challenger, SPIN, or Sandler; and the tools in your stack, such as Salesforce, HubSpot, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Outreach, or Gong. Back up your strongest skills with bullets that show results, because a skill list alone doesn't prove much.

Show transferable results from customer-facing work. Retail, hospitality, customer service, fundraising, recruiting, and teaching all involve persuasion and targets. Quantify upsells, conversion, customer ratings, or money raised. Add a short summary naming the sales role you want, list any sales training or tools you've learned, and keep your bullets focused on numbers and outcomes.

No. Leave compensation, on-target earnings, and commission off your resume. Pay belongs in the negotiation stage, not in the screening document, and including it can anchor the conversation too early. Focus your resume on attainment, revenue, rankings, and deal context instead. If an application form asks for pay history, check whether your state limits that question.

Use the metrics you actually owned. Most SDRs are measured on meetings booked, qualified opportunities, and pipeline created, so lead with those. If you can credibly tie your opportunities to closed revenue, add it with clear wording, such as sourced opportunities that closed for $800K. Avoid claiming closed revenue as your own when an account executive closed the deal.
