Accountant Resume: Examples and Writing Guide
Write an accountant resume that proves accuracy and speed: a full sample, close-cycle metrics, CPA formatting, and versions for audit, tax, and FP&A roles.
Key takeaways
- An accountant resume is judged on credentials, systems, and evidence of accurate, on-time work, in that order.
- Quantify scope and speed: entities, revenue size, accounts reconciled, days to close, and audit results.
- List your CPA status precisely, whether licensed, exam sections passed, or eligible, and put it where a recruiter sees it in seconds.
- Audit, tax, corporate, and FP&A roles reward different evidence, so tailor the title, summary, and top bullets to the track.
- BLS projects 5% growth for accountants and auditors from 2025 to 2035, with about 115,300 openings a year.
An accountant resume is read by people who check numbers for a living. A controller or audit partner will notice a vague bullet, an inconsistent date, or a missing credential faster than almost any other reviewer. That is good news if you write the way you work: precisely, with evidence, and with nothing left to interpretation.
This guide gives you a complete sample resume, then shows how to adapt it for audit, tax, corporate accounting, and FP&A roles. You'll get a metrics table built around the close cycle, a skills table covering software, standards, and certifications, bullets for staff through manager levels, and current BLS pay and outlook data.
The core rule is simple. Show scope, speed, and accuracy with numbers, and make your credential status impossible to miss. Everything below is a way to do that on one or two pages.
What hiring managers look for on an accountant resume#
Accounting hiring managers tend to scan in a predictable order. First, do you have the credential or the path to it? Second, do you know the systems and standards they use? Third, is there proof that your work is accurate and on time? Your resume should answer all three before the reader reaches the middle of the page.
What the job data says#
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 1.6 million accountants and auditors, with a median wage of $83,680 as of May 2025. The typical entry requirement is a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
BLS lists five important qualities: analytical and critical-thinking skills, communication skills, attention to detail, math skills, and organizational skills. Communication is the one most accountants underplay. Explaining a variance to a nonfinancial manager, or walking an auditor through a reconciliation, is part of the job. Show it.
On the systems side, the Labor Department's O*NET profile flags Microsoft Excel, QuickBooks, and SAP as in-demand technology. It also lists Oracle PeopleSoft, Workday, SAP Concur, Tableau, and Alteryx among hot technologies for the occupation. Those are the exact tool names to mirror when a posting asks for them.
The three filters every reviewer applies#
- Credential: CPA license, exam progress, or eligibility, plus any specialty credential such as CMA or CIA.
- Systems and standards: the ERP, close tools, and standards you've worked with, such as NetSuite, BlackLine, GAAP, ASC 606, or SOX.
- Evidence: numbers that show scope (entities, revenue size, accounts) and performance (days to close, audit results, errors avoided).
BLS notes that any accountant who files reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission must be a licensed CPA. If you're targeting public company reporting roles, your license status belongs in the top line of the resume.

Why this sample works#
- The credential is in the name line and the license section. A recruiter confirms CPA status in one glance.
- Scope comes first. Three entities and $240M in revenue tell the reader how complex the books are before any bullet starts.
- Speed and accuracy are both proven. Days to close shows speed. Aged reconciling items and clean audits show accuracy.
- Standards are named, not implied. ASC 606 and ASC 842 match keywords that corporate postings use.
- Public accounting experience shows growth. The combined "Audit Senior / Audit Associate" title and the promotion bullet show progress without repeating duties. Our guide to multiple positions at the same company covers other ways to format promotions.
- Clients stay anonymous. Industries and revenue ranges give scope without breaking confidentiality.
Tailor your accountant resume to audit, tax, corporate, or FP&A roles#
"Accountant" covers several distinct careers. BLS describes public accountants, management accountants, government accountants, and internal, external, and IT auditors as separate types. Each one rewards different evidence. Pick the track you're applying for and tune the title, summary, and first bullets to it.
| Track | Typical titles | What to emphasize | Metrics that fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| External audit | Audit associate, audit senior | Engagements, industries, controls testing, supervision | Engagements per year, client size, team size |
| Tax | Tax associate, tax senior, tax accountant | Return types, entities, research, provisions | Returns prepared, entities, savings found |
| Corporate and general ledger | Staff or senior accountant, GL accountant | Close, reconciliations, journal entries, reporting | Days to close, accounts reconciled, errors |
| Internal audit and SOX | Internal auditor, SOX analyst | Controls, risk, remediation, process change | Controls tested, findings closed |
| FP&A-leaning | Accounting and planning analyst | Budgets, forecasts, variance analysis | Forecast accuracy, budget size |
| AP, AR, and payroll | AP or AR accountant, payroll accountant | Volume, accuracy, cash, vendor terms | Invoices per month, DSO, payment errors |
Summary lines for each track#
The quickest way to tailor is to rewrite your summary for the track. Here is how the opening line changes:
External audit: Audit senior with 4 years at a regional CPA firm, leading fieldwork on 6 engagements a year for manufacturing and healthcare clients with $20M–$400M in revenue.
Tax: Tax senior with 5 years preparing and reviewing 1065, 1120-S, and 1040 returns, handling 150+ returns a season in UltraTax CS and leading state nexus research for multistate clients.
Corporate: Staff accountant with 3 years in a NetSuite environment, owning 40 account reconciliations and the fixed asset subledger for a $90M distributor.
Internal audit: Internal auditor with 4 years testing SOX controls across order-to-cash and procure-to-pay, closing 85% of findings within one quarter.
FP&A-leaning: Accountant moving into FP&A after 3 years of close and variance analysis; built the monthly budget-to-actual package for 6 department heads.
Moving from public accounting to industry#
The most common accounting career move is from a CPA firm to a corporate team. Hiring managers in industry like audit experience, but they want to know you can own a process, not just test one. Translate your public accounting work into corporate language:
- Engagements become processes. "Tested revenue controls on 6 engagements" becomes evidence that you understand order-to-cash and can own revenue reporting.
- Clients become industries. Name the industries you know best, since a manufacturer will value inventory and cost experience.
- PBC requests become audit readiness. You know what auditors ask for, which makes you the natural audit coordinator on a corporate team.
- Supervision becomes leadership. Reviewing associates' work shows you can review journal entries and reconciliations for a team.
Move the most relevant cycle, such as revenue, inventory, or payroll, to the top of your audit bullets for each application.
If you're moving from accounting into analysis, our guides to the financial analyst resume and business analyst resume show how those roles frame similar skills differently.
How to list a CPA and other certifications on your resume#
Credentials carry unusual weight in accounting, so format them carefully. The biggest mistake is ambiguity. A recruiter should never have to guess whether you're licensed, partway through the exam, or still planning.
Match the wording to your exact status#
| Your status | How to write it | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed CPA | "Taylor Brooks, CPA" and "Certified Public Accountant, Minnesota, 2021" | Name line and license section |
| Passed all sections, awaiting license | "CPA exam passed (all sections); license expected June 2027" | Certifications section and summary |
| Partway through the exam | "CPA candidate: passed FAR and AUD; REG scheduled March 2027" | Certifications section |
| Meets education requirement, not started | "CPA eligible (Illinois); first section planned for 2027" | Certifications section |
| Still earning credit hours | "On track for 150 credit hours by May 2027" | Education section |
Don't put "CPA" after your name until a state board licenses you. Claiming it early can cost you the offer when the employer verifies.
CPA exam sections and licensure basics#
The AICPA's overview of what the CPA Exam tests lists the sections by abbreviation: AUD, FAR, REG, BAR, ISC, and TCP. Candidates take the three core sections (AUD, FAR, REG) plus one discipline section of their choice. Use the official abbreviations on your resume, since recruiters in the field recognize them instantly.
According to BLS, CPAs are licensed by state boards of accountancy, and all states require 150 semester hours of college coursework, 30 more than a typical bachelor's degree. A few states allow public accounting experience to substitute for a degree. If you're still building hours, say how you'll get there.
Other credentials worth listing#
- CMA (Certified Management Accountant): useful for corporate, cost, and FP&A-leaning roles.
- CIA (Certified Internal Auditor): the standard credential for internal audit careers.
- CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor): valuable for IT audit and SOX technology roles.
- EA (Enrolled Agent): an IRS credential that strengthens tax resumes, especially for representation work.
- Software certifications: NetSuite, QuickBooks ProAdvisor, or similar, when the posting names the system.
List each credential with the issuer and year. Our guide to certifications on a resume covers placement, and the free certifications section generator formats them consistently.
How to write an accountant resume summary#
Your summary should read like a one-paragraph scope statement. Name your credential, years, track, the size of the books or clients you handle, your systems, and one result. Skip traits like "detail-oriented." In accounting, every applicant claims it, and your bullets will prove it better.
A summary formula for accountants#
Build it in this order, keeping it to three sentences:
- Credential and title, such as "CPA and senior accountant."
- Years and track, such as "6 years in public and corporate accounting."
- Scope, such as entities, revenue, clients, or return volume.
- One headline result, such as a shorter close or a clean audit.
- Your main systems and standards.
Before and after: an accountant summary#
A weak summary lists traits and generic duties. A strong one gives a recruiter the scope and proof they would otherwise hunt for in your bullets.
BeforeDetail-oriented accounting professional with strong analytical skills and a passion for accuracy. Experienced in reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
AfterStaff accountant with 3 years in a NetSuite environment, owning 40 monthly reconciliations and the fixed asset subledger for a $90M distributor. Helped cut the close from 8 to 6 business days by rebuilding the accrual workbook. CPA candidate: passed FAR, AUD scheduled for April 2027.
The second version answers all three reviewer filters (credential, systems, evidence) in three sentences. For more summary patterns across fields, see our resume summary examples.
Accounting metrics to quantify on your resume#
Accounting is full of countable work, but many resumes still read "prepared journal entries and reconciliations." The numbers below turn that duty into evidence. Use the ones your role actually tracked.
| Area | What to quantify | Sample phrasing |
|---|---|---|
| Month-end close | Days to close, entities, revenue size | "Cut close from 9 to 5 business days for 3 entities" |
| Reconciliations | Accounts per month, aged items | "Reconcile 65 accounts; aged items cut from 31 to 4" |
| Journal entries | Volume, automation, accuracy | "Automated 22 recurring entries in NetSuite" |
| Audit support | PBC requests, adjustments, findings | "140+ PBC requests on time; no adjustments" |
| Tax | Returns, entity types, savings | "Prepared 150+ partnership and S corp returns a season" |
| AP and AR | Invoices, DSO, discounts captured | "Cut DSO from 52 to 41 days" |
| Reporting | Packages, deadlines, audience | "Monthly CFO package delivered by day 5" |
| Savings and recoveries | Dollars found or saved | "Recovered $86K in duplicate vendor payments" |
Close-cycle metrics carry the most weight#
For corporate roles, days to close is the single most recognizable metric. A shorter close means leadership gets numbers sooner, and it usually reflects automation, better reconciliations, and cleaner processes. If you helped shorten the close, lead with it. If you didn't, show your part of the close: the accounts, entities, or subledgers you own.
The chart below is illustrative. It shows how one hypothetical team's close shortened over a year of process changes, which is the kind of story a "from 9 to 5 days" bullet compresses into one line.
Illustrative: a close cycle shortened over four quarters

Scope numbers matter as much as results#
Not every accountant gets to redesign a process. Scope numbers still prove what you can handle:
- Number of entities, subsidiaries, or currencies in your close.
- Revenue or asset size of the company or clients.
- Accounts you reconcile each month.
- Journal entries, invoices, or returns per month or season.
- Size of engagement teams you led or supervised.
In public accounting, don't name clients or reveal anything specific about their financials. Describe them by industry and size range instead. Recruiters expect this, and it shows you understand confidentiality.
Our guide to quantifying achievements has more ways to find and phrase numbers honestly.
Accountant skills, software, and certifications#
Your skills section should read like a technical inventory: accounting areas, standards, and systems, all named precisely. Build it from the posting and keep it to two or three grouped lines.
Skills table: hard skills, tools, and certifications#
| Category | Examples to list | How to prove it |
|---|---|---|
| Core accounting | GL, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, consolidations, intercompany | Close and reconciliation bullets |
| Standards and compliance | GAAP, IFRS, ASC 606, ASC 842, SOX, GASB for government | Bullets naming the standard you applied |
| ERP and accounting systems | NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Workday Financials, Microsoft Dynamics, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct | Close and reporting bullets |
| Close and audit tools | BlackLine, FloQast, CaseWare, SAP Concur | Automation and audit bullets |
| Tax software | CCH Axcess, UltraTax CS, Lacerte, GoSystem | Return volume bullets |
| Data and analysis | Advanced Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Alteryx, SQL basics | Templates, dashboards, analysis |
| Certifications | CPA, CMA, CIA, CISA, EA | License and certifications section |
For broader advice on presenting technical tools, see our guide to technical skills on a resume.
Describe Excel like an accountant#
Every accountant lists Excel, so the word alone adds nothing. Name the features that show real skill:
- Lookups and joins: XLOOKUP, INDEX and MATCH, Power Query merges.
- Analysis: pivot tables, SUMIFS, variance and flux templates.
- Automation: macros or VBA, templates that refresh from ERP exports.
- Controls: locked templates, check totals, and reconciliation tie-outs.
Only list what you could demonstrate in a skills test. Many accounting employers give one.
When to list standards and compliance keywords#
Standards are some of the strongest keywords on an accounting resume, but only when you have applied them. List a standard when you did real work under it:
- ASC 606: you reviewed contracts, set up performance obligations, or reconciled deferred revenue.
- ASC 842: you built or maintained a lease schedule, or helped with a lease system implementation.
- SOX: you documented, tested, or owned key controls, or remediated a deficiency.
- GASB: you worked on government or public-sector financial statements.
- IFRS: you reported to a foreign parent or handled conversions between frameworks.
If you only studied a standard in school, list it under relevant coursework instead of skills. Interviewers often ask you to walk through how you applied it.
Accountant resume bullets by seniority level#
Write for the level you want next. Every number in these examples is illustrative, so replace it with your own.
Entry level and staff accountant#
- Reconcile 40 balance sheet accounts monthly for a $90M distributor, clearing all reconciling items within 30 days
- Post 300+ journal entries a month, including accruals, prepaids, and fixed asset depreciation
- Maintain the fixed asset subledger for 1,100 assets; found $64K in fully depreciated assets still in use for re-evaluation
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for 8 accounts and flag exceptions to the controller by day 3
Senior accountant and audit senior#
- Lead month-end close for 3 entities; cut close from 9 to 5 business days by automating 22 recurring entries
- Own ASC 842 lease accounting for 60+ leases, including the system migration from spreadsheets to the ERP lease module
- Led fieldwork on 6 audit engagements a year, supervising 3–4 associates and delivering every report by deadline
- Recovered $86K in duplicate vendor payments by building a monthly AP duplicate check in Excel
Accounting manager, controller, and tax manager#
- Manage a team of 5 accountants and the full close for a $400M company with 7 entities in 3 currencies
- Led the NetSuite implementation for the accounting team, going live on schedule with no missed closes
- Remediated 2 material weaknesses from the prior year audit; received a clean SOX opinion the following year
- Reduced annual audit fees 15% by preparing a complete PBC package before fieldwork started
- Supervised preparation of 400+ returns a season and cut review notes per return by a third through a new checklist
For verbs that fit accounting, such as reconciled, remediated, streamlined, and automated, see our list of resume action verbs. The free resume bullet point generator can also turn a plain duty into a draft you then tighten with your real figures.
Before-and-after rewrites for accounting bullets#
Weak accounting bullets usually describe a duty that every applicant shares. Strong ones add scope, method, and result. Here are rewrites that show the difference.
BeforePrepared month-end journal entries.
AfterPost 300+ monthly journal entries for 3 entities; automated 22 recurring entries in NetSuite, saving about 10 hours each close.
BeforePerformed account reconciliations.
AfterReconcile 65 balance sheet accounts monthly, cutting reconciling items older than 60 days from 31 to 4.
BeforeAssisted with the annual audit.
AfterDelivered 140+ PBC requests on time for the external audit, with no proposed adjustments for 2 years running.
BeforePrepared tax returns.
AfterPrepared 150+ partnership and S corp returns per season in UltraTax CS, with review notes per return down a third year over year.
A checklist for every bullet#
Run each bullet through these questions before you keep it:
- Does it name the scope, such as entities, accounts, clients, or dollars?
- Does it name the method or system, such as NetSuite, BlackLine, or a standard like ASC 606?
- Does it show a result: time saved, errors cut, money recovered, or a clean audit?
- Could a controller verify it by asking you one follow-up question?
If a bullet only passes the first question, it's still a duty. Add the result or replace it with a stronger example.
Entry-level accountant resume: new graduates and interns#
Entry-level accounting hiring often runs on a campus recruiting calendar, especially at CPA firms. Recruiters compare candidates on education, internships, exam plans, and early evidence of accuracy and teamwork. O*NET reports that 69% of respondents said a bachelor's degree is required for accountants and auditors, so your education section carries more weight than it will later.
What to put in your education section#
- Degree, school, and graduation date (or expected date).
- GPA if it's 3.0 or higher, and major GPA if it's stronger.
- Progress toward 150 credit hours, or a combined bachelor's and master's program.
- Relevant coursework, such as intermediate accounting, auditing, tax, and accounting information systems.
- Honors, accounting society leadership, or case competition results.
Our guides to GPA on a resume and relevant coursework explain when each is worth including.
Experience that counts before your first full-time job#
Audit Intern | Regional CPA firm | Jan–Apr 2026
- Tested 120+ revenue and expense samples across 3 engagements and documented results in CaseWare
- Prepared bank and cash confirmations for 2 nonprofit clients, tying out balances within 1 week
VITA Volunteer | Campus tax clinic | Feb–Apr 2025
- Prepared 45 federal and state returns for low-income filers, with all returns accepted on first submission
Bookkeeper (part-time) | Family-owned landscaping business | 2023–2025
- Kept the books in QuickBooks Online for a $600K business, reconciling 3 bank accounts monthly
Moving up from bookkeeping, AP, or AR#
Many staff accountants start as bookkeepers, AP or AR clerks, or payroll specialists. If that's your path, show that you already do accountant-level work. Emphasize reconciliations you own, accruals or journal entries you prepare, month-end tasks you handle, and any time you found and fixed an error before it reached the financial statements. Pair that with your degree progress or a credential plan, since many staff accountant postings require a bachelor's degree in accounting.
If your experience is mostly school-based, see our guide to an internship resume, which covers how to present internships and class projects.
Put your CPA plan on the resume even as a student, for example "Plan to sit for FAR in summer 2027." Firms hire with licensure in mind, and a dated plan signals commitment.
Accountant pay and job outlook from BLS data#
BLS reports a median wage of $83,680 for accountants and auditors as of May 2025. The lowest 10% earned less than $56,020, and the top 10% earned more than $144,090. Pay varies by industry, with finance and insurance at the top of the largest employers.

| Finance and insurance | $93,290 |
| Management of companies | $91,940 |
| Government | $83,350 |
| Accounting and tax services | $81,490 |
Outlook and what it means for you#
BLS projects employment of accountants and auditors to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations. That works out to about 115,300 openings a year, many from workers retiring or changing fields. BLS ties demand to the overall economy and new business creation.
BLS also notes that cloud computing, AI, and blockchain may automate routine tasks like data entry, but it does not expect that to reduce overall demand. The practical lesson for your resume:
- Show judgment work. Revenue recognition, controls, audit coordination, and variance explanations are harder to automate than posting entries.
- Show the automation you've built. Recurring entries moved to the ERP, reconciliation tools, and templates prove you make technology work for the team.
- Pick your industry deliberately. Accounting firms employ 21% of accountants and auditors, according to BLS, but finance, insurance, and corporate headquarters pay higher medians.
Common accountant resume mistakes#
These errors appear on accounting resumes constantly, and each one is easy to fix:
- Ambiguous credential status. "CPA (in progress)" leaves the reader guessing. Name sections passed and target dates.
- Duties without scope. "Performed reconciliations" could mean 3 accounts or 300. Add the number.
- Missing standards and systems. If you applied ASC 606 or worked in NetSuite, name it.
- Naming clients. Use industries and size ranges instead.
- Generic Excel claims. Name features such as pivot tables, XLOOKUP, or Power Query.
- Inconsistent numbers. A revenue figure in your summary that differs from the one in your bullet is a red flag for an accounting reviewer.
- Long paragraphs. Accountants reviewing resumes skim. Keep bullets to one or two lines.
What changes for managers and controllers#
Once you manage people, your resume should shift from personal output to team and process results. Lead each role with the team size, entity count, and revenue scale. Then show systems you implemented, audit outcomes, controls you strengthened, and how you developed your staff. Two pages are fine at this level if the second page holds results, not older duties.
Before sending, run your resume through an ATS resume checker to make sure your license, dates, and job titles parse cleanly.
Final checklist and next steps#
Run through this checklist before every application:
- Credential status is precise and visible in the top third of the page.
- The title and summary match the track: audit, tax, corporate, internal audit, or FP&A.
- Each recent role shows scope, such as entities, revenue, clients, or accounts.
- At least two bullets show a result, such as a shorter close, clean audit, or recovered dollars.
- Standards and systems from the posting appear in your skills and bullets.
- No client names or confidential details appear anywhere.
- Every number is consistent across the summary and bullets.
- The file is a PDF with your name in the filename.
To tailor quickly, paste the posting into a job description keyword finder and check which systems and standards you've left out. Then add only the ones you can back up. Our guide on how to tailor your resume covers the full routine.
Prepare for technical interview questions#
Accounting interviews often include technical questions alongside behavioral ones. Expect to be asked to walk through a reconciliation you owned, explain how an accrual flows through the financial statements, or describe how you would investigate an unexpected variance. Every number on your resume is fair game, so be ready to explain how each one was measured and what you did to move it.
If you keep several versions, such as one for audit and one for corporate roles, Resume Maker lets you store multiple resumes and download each as a PDF. Finally, prepare for the interview with the same evidence: our guide to behavioral interview questions shows how to turn your close or audit bullets into short, specific stories.
